16x20" canvas, painted at age 15 in high school art class
Rebecca Burg has been fascinated by art since early childhood. She was always carrying a sketch pad and it just seemed to be the natural thing to draw and paint. Growing up in an ordinary, rather financially-strapped family, Rebecca had no special training. However, she did have encouraging art teachers in grammar school and high school art classes. Shown here are a few paintings from the artist’s teenage years. These paintings are self-taught.
“Okay, I admit it, I was - still am - a “Trekkie” and a science fiction geek,” Rebecca admits when asked about those unusual, early space-themed paintings. “I really enjoy science fiction and love to use my imagination, so my art reflects that. It’s boring to paint something that a camera can simply take a picture of. Why not paint something that a camera can never capture- the wild depths of the imagination.”
Of course, the artist enjoys painting photo-realistic paintings for collectors, for people interested in portraits of their pets or special illustrations for publications.

As for the scary monsters, the artist paints any subject and has created plenty of strange fantasy creatures for her clients. She has done work for gaming magazines, gamer’s characters, sci-fi conventions and collectors of dragons and fantasy art. “Again, it’s a chance to use that stretchy imagination,” Rebecca says. “Drawings of monsters don’t scare me. While I’m not into horror or bloody scenes, I do like to create imaginative creatures. Spooky aliens to beautiful fairies are all fair game.”
After high school, Rebecca worked to pay her way through college and took some industrial design and graphics courses. She then completed a degree in mechanical design (drafting) from MoraineParkCollege and continued working the night shift to pay for a degree in communications and management from ConcordiaUniversity. After graduating college, she moved onto her sailboat to resume the boating life. Her artistic work is influenced by high school and college drafting classes (remember those old drafting machines- before AutoCAD?), hence the detailed and technical aspects of her work.

Custom created artwork includes what's known as "soul", "visionary art" or intuitive painting. Growing up with her native culture's spiritual beliefs, Rebecca did not give up her elder's old traditions to our modern, fast-food society. The teachings that were passed on by her grandmothers and grandfathers are cherished and held close. Today, these ancient ways influence Rebecca's artwork and she will create custom work that is inspired by the light-filled realm of the spirit. A few examples are shown above.
